One year after performing Tolima's first bone marrow transplant, Clinaltec extended the service to pediatric patients.
On July 24, 2025, the institution performed the first bone marrow transplant carried out in the department. In 2026, it opened the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, which brings the same procedure to children and adolescents with leukemias, lymphomas, and other hematological diseases.
Why a separate pediatric service
A transplant in a pediatric patient is not a scaled-down version of the adult procedure. Conditioning is calculated based on different parameters, subsequent isolation requires specific conditions, and family support ceases to be mere support to become part of the treatment. That is why the pediatric unit operates with distinct equipment, protocols, and infrastructure.
For the families of Tolima, the change is concrete: until now, a pediatric hematological diagnosis requiring a transplant meant moving the child and at least one caregiver to Bogotá or Medellín for months, with the cost and uprooting that implies.
The pediatric unit is integrated with the rest of Clinaltec's oncology pathway, ensuring that the patient and their family complete treatment without leaving the region.
