Clinaltec added the High Complexity Cardiovascular Unit to its offering, a service that brings together in a single location the cardiological care that previously required referring patients outside the department.
The unit entered service in January 2023 and integrates four fronts: cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, hemodynamics, and support with ECMO technology — extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, the resource used when the heart or lungs need their function temporarily replaced.
What does high complexity mean in cardiology
The difference between a cardiology service and a high-complexity unit lies in the ceiling: how far the institution can go before having to refer. With its own cath lab, cardiovascular operating room, and available ECMO, that ceiling rises considerably, and with it the proportion of patients who resolve their condition without being transferred.
At the time of its opening, the institution set the expansion of the service toward heart transplantation as its development horizon.
