The bell of life: the sound of victory against childhood cancer at Ibagué Clinic

La campana de la vida: el sonido de la victoria contra el cáncer infantil en Clínica de Ibagu

The bells have had many meanings, depending on the place or date, but for Clinaltec's youngest patients in Ibagué has represented life itself.

And it is not for less, because the ringing of the bell is the indicator of a war won and the road to freedom, literally.

"The bell is like the cry for life, that's really what it means, considering that these are children who are fighting for it," explained Dr. Luz Elena Botero, a pediatric intensivist and leader of Clinaltec's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

"This is the culmination of the fact that they came out triumphant and benefited from all their efforts to life. So that ringing of the bell is like shouting: look, here I am, I am alive because of my efforts and the treatment offered to me by the medical and paramedical personnel," he added.

This is how, according to Dr. Botero, the bell has also been the hope and the end point for other cancer patients.

"Seeing them, the other children are motivated to think: it's going to be my turn, the moment will come when I will be the one to ring the bell, shouting out to life," he said.

Cancer is a disease whose medicine is not only the one that goes through the physical body, but one that also embraces the soul, as is the power of love.

"At Clinaltec we have a very complementary support, both social, psychological and medical, which makes it a comprehensive management, because we do not only think about treating, but also about giving love, affection, a smile, celebrating their birthday and special dates," said the doctor.

We have heard on several occasions that unity is strength, and perhaps the clearest example is the long-awaited moment of ringing the bell.

"The moment of the ringing of the bell is very special, not only for the patient and his or her family, but really for all of us who have been fortunate enough to witness one. It is a mixture of laughter, tears and pride," said another Clinic official.
