Dr. Diana Giraldo, an oncoplastic surgeon at Clinaltec, is leading a skin cancer prevention campaign aimed at farmworkers in Tolima through the Department of Research and Teaching.
The starting point is a conviction that the institution has made explicit: education is the most effective form of prevention. Hence, campaigns are directed not only at patients, but also at general practitioners, family members, and the community.
Oncology Fighters, the community behind the campaign
The initiative is supported by Oncology Fighters, a community created by Clinaltec and made up of oncologists from various specialties. Its function is educational: to bring knowledge about early diagnosis—which usually remains within the specialized circuit—to doctors, patients, and the general public.

Why skin cancer and why the countryside
The current focus of the campaign is skin cancer in rural farming communities. The reason is exposure: prolonged outdoor work shifts involve an accumulation of solar radiation far greater than that of the urban population, and that accumulation is the main modifiable risk factor for the disease.
Dr. Giraldo addressed the issue in an interview with El Espectador, published on the occasion of World Cancer Day, in which she spoke about both the campaign and her approach to oncological plastic surgery.
